Staycation in Devon

28 Jun 2024

When it comes to staycation spots in the UK, you can’t beat the South West. Devon has an abundance of must-visit staycation locations, from coastline to national park. We’ve put together the top five places to staycation in Devon, to give you the perfect opportunity to discover more of the county this summer.

Torquay

The English Riviera has been a much-loved holiday destination for decades, with Torquay being the hot spot. With an abundance of things to do, sights to see, and history to unveil, you can’t go wrong with a visit to the South Devon Coast.

Perhaps most known for being the birthplace of iconic crime writer Agatha Christie and its colourful beach huts and lively marina, there’s a reason Torquay is so popular among holidaymakers. Visit the many beaches around the town, pop to Babbacombe Model Village, and discover the animals at the coast’s beloved Paignton Zoo.

Exmouth

A lively town on the East Devon coast, Exmouth has lots of offer for visitors, be it family, friends, or couples; there’s something for everyone. Two miles of sandy beach provide an ideal location for brushing up on your water sport skills (or learning as a beginner!) and the Exe estuary has plenty of wildlife for the nature lovers.

Along the seafront is a plethora of parks and activities, meaning children are guaranteed a lack of boredom. Your perfect day out along the Jurassic Coast begins in Exmouth.

Dartmoor

Almost 1,000 square kilometres of vast moorland covers South Devon, and the diverse landscape comprises wild ponies, rugged rocks, forests, rivers, quarries, valleys, and more. Whether you’re after an activity-packed weekend of hiking and rock climbing, or a relaxing break filled with leisurely walks and lunches in country pubs, there is guaranteed to be somewhere on Dartmoor for you.

Enjoy wild swimming, local ice creams, and breath-taking views.

Woolacombe

Located on the rugged North Devon coast, there’s a reason why the charming resort of Woolacombe is a popular holiday destination. Its golden beach spanning three miles often makes the list of best beaches in not just the UK, but Europe as a whole. It’s the perfect location for families looking for adventure or those who are wanting to explore water sports; whatever you’re after, the seaside at Woolacombe caters for it.

Enjoy sightseeing, rock pooling, swimming, relaxing, and trying new things at Woolacombe and its surrounding areas.

Salcombe

Salcombe is notoriously one of the most sought after villages in the country, and rightfully so. The cosmopolitan harbour town and surrounding golden beaches provide the perfect landscape for a getaway, with an atmosphere that carries you into summer holiday bliss.

Fine dining, beach sunsets, and gorgeous scenery are just a few of the benefits of staycationing in Salcombe. Catch the passenger ferry to the beaches at East Portlemouth or the iconic sea tractor to nearby South Sands to explore more of the gorgeous coastline.
